"Public Relations" is the culmination of a photographic project initiated by Winogrand in 1969 when he received a Guggenheim Fellowship to photograph what he called "the effect of media on events". The rituals of a publicity-hungry society, which historian Daniel Boorstin describes as "pseudo-events", fascinate Garry Winogrand. What these events have in common is that they are created as much for media interest as for self-promotion. The photographs depict the burgeoning craze of a 1970s society that revelled in the celebration of the self, and in which the presence of the media became increasingly important in public life. With this series, Winogrand has not only succeeded in capturing the spirit of that era, he has also put his finger on a development that is more relevant today than ever.
