Maurice of Saxony (Moritz von Sachsen), The Reveries... First edition.

Memoirs of the French marshal Count Maurice of Saxony (1696-1750), one of the most illustrious warriors of the 18th century. Maurice de Saxe, the famous victor of Fontenoy (1745), wrote this fundamental work for strategic thinking between 1732 and 1738; the work was published posthumously in 1756, edited by Capitaine de Bonneville, followed by "Reflexions sur la propagation de l'espece humaine" (p. 207 - 223), in which Maurice de Saxe displays his natalist views on the demographic question. A second version was published the following year by Abbé Perau. A supplemental volume by Baron D.P.N. was published in Paris in 1757.
This posthumous work theorised recruitment, maintenance and training of troops, then the association of infantry and cavalry, fortification and entrenchment, and finally the qualities necessary for generals. His lofty views made Frederick the Great say: "I learned from his speeches, not in the French language, but in the art of war. This marshal could be a teacher to all the generals of Europe."

Antoine de Ricouart d'Herouville de Clay, Mémoires sur l'Infanterie ... The Hague, at the expense of the Company, 1753. 96 pp. 3 folding tables out of text.

There are three editions of this work printed in 1753, all three with the author stated to be the Count of Saxony. It is not clear which of the three editions is the first. It is not clear who the real author of the work is. Today it is commonly accepted that the author is Hérouville Claye (1712-1782), a French war hero who participated in several military campaigns under Louis XV, notably in Flanders and Germany, and who was also one of the most important coal entrepreneurs in 18th century France. He attained the rank of lieutenant-general, the rank immediately below the highest position in the French army, that of marshal and inspector-general of the infantry, also composing several studies of military tactics. A member of the Montauban and Bordeaux academies, he was one of the founders of the Royal Agricultural Society of Paris. He was also the author of several scientific and literary works, including the Encyclopaedia metodica, and Elements provided mineralogy. This work, which was certainly not printed during the author's lifetime, was found in manuscript among the papers of the famous Marshal of France, Maurice Count of Saxony. Maurice, impressed by the wisdom of the work, revised the text in the last years of his life, adding some of his own considerations, but leaving it in manuscript and unpublished. This probably explains the misattribution of the work to Maurice Comte de Saxe. Quérard writes of the work and its editions, "All the editions of this work are rare."
