The Institute for Palestinian Studies is a non-governmental, non-profit Arab research institute. It was established in 1963 in Beirut. The institute aims to promote a better understanding of the Palestinian question. It is the oldest institute in the world dedicated exclusively to documentation, research, analysis, and publication on topics related to Palestine and the Arab-Israeli conflict. More commonly known as IPS (Institute for Palestine Studies), it supports the Institute for Palestine Studies created in Washington in 1982 as well as the Institute for Jerusalem Studies in Ramallah, created in 19951. For the latter, the Israeli authorities have forbidden the use of the word "Palestine", which explains why it bears a different name from the first two1. Originally, its premises were located in East Jerusalem, but they had to move to Ramallah in the West Bank from 2000 onwards, as the Israeli authorities restricted access to Jerusalem for the West Bank population, which prevented some of the Institute's employees from travelling to their place of work1. The Beirut Institute publishes four quarterly journals in English, French and Arabic. They are independently edited and published from Washington, Paris, Jerusalem and Beirut respectively.
