The Chasseurs d'Afrique were the light cavalry of the French Army troops stationed in Algeria (called "Armée d'Afrique") . These regiments, created from 1830, were disbanded in 1962, but their traditions are preserved today in the 1st RCA.
By order of Louis Philippe dated November 17, 1831, the 4th regiment of chasseurs d'Afrique was created in Blida. Its motto is "Ubique Primus" - "Everywhere the first".
Photo found in a batch of photos from Indochina. One of the Chasseurs in the photo probably participated in the Tonkin campaign in 1884 with the 1st Chasseurs d'Afrique.
