A reference work on decorative art, a veritable illustrated method which proposes to guide and stimulate "young artists in the path that leads to art and beauty" (p.5). This educational treatise, published by Plon in 1911, was reprinted several times. As soon as it was published, many magazines echoed it. The text and drawings were composed by Messrs Gauthier and Capelle, both professors at the Nantes School of Fine Arts and considered, in La Chronique des arts et des curiosités of the same year, as two "specialists" in the field. In the rules of art. This is a marvellously and abundantly illustrated book: Joseph Gauthier composed the 865 figures which decorate the text while Louis Capelle signed the 53 plates out of text (of which 1 in colour). In addition, each end of chapter is embellished with a different vignette, called a "cul de lampe".
The authors clearly and methodically explain the sources and laws of decorative composition, before establishing its various applications. The study and detailed description of the elements or motifs are classified in a scientific manner: geometry, flora, fauna, the human figure, landscape and objects. The world is put through a "decorative filter", transposed aesthetically. Each chapter heading is "personalised" by a richly illustrated banner: drawings that are integrated into the announcement text like ivy on the wall.
