French first edition, illustrated with a folded map of the environs of Naples and Mount Vesuvius and 5 engraved plates of Vesuvius in activity.

Giovanni Maria Della Torre (1710-1782), librarian of the Borbonico Museum Library, was a scientist and vulcanologist, and first published this work in 1755. An important description of the eruptions of Vesuvius up to 1751 and 1754, with an interesting bibliography of authors who have written on the subject since 1631 at the end of the work, as well as a critical Dissertation by Father Gaetan d'Amato (p. 295 - 370) and additions by Della Torre.
Della-Torre observed the eruptions of Vesuvius in 1751 and 1754 and made many trips to refine them. He did not limit himself to describing the various eruptions and the characteristics of the volcano, but sought to penetrate the mystery and physical laws of the earth. In order to complete his work he also drew on everything that had been written in the field since antiquity.
