The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms (Die Philosophie der symbolischen Formen, 1923-1929) is considered the masterwork of the German philosopher Ernst Cassirer (1874-1945). Formed by Kantianism and a direct heir to the Aufklärung, an encyclopaedic mind, Cassirer attempted the synthesis of Kantian idealism (criticalism) with a thought of history and even of commitment: forced into exile by Nazism, as early as 1933, because of his Jewish origins, he devoted his last book to The Myth of the State (posthumous, 1946).
