In accordance with the wishes of his father Edhem Pasha, who was at one time Grand Vizier, he studied chemistry at the universities of Zurich, Bern and Vienna and was a professor in Istanbul. But it was history and archaeology that fascinated him. He was assistant to the director of the Museums from 1889, then deputy director and became director of the museums (1910-1931) of the Ottoman Empire, then of the Turkish Republic. It was he who arranged the museums of Istanbul to distribute and display the collections that occupied the Çinli Köşk and to enhance them. He wrote mostly in Turkish, but also some articles in French and some works are translated from Turkish into French. Many of his publications are devoted to Arabic and Turkish inscriptions, the study of which was his speciality.
