The Bardo Thödol, meaning Liberation through Listening in the Intermediate States is a Tibetan Buddhist text describing the states of consciousness and perceptions succeeding one another during the period from death to rebirth. - The first part, called Chikhai Bardo, describes the moment of death. - The second part, Chonyid Bardo, deals with the states that occur immediately after death. - The third part, Sidpa Bardo, deals with the appearance of the birth instinct and prenatal. This work is linked to the Nyingmapa school, whose tradition sees certain sacred texts by prestigious authors as rediscoveries by Tertöns of hidden works known as terma. The Bardo Thödol is a terma attributed to Padmasambhava, founder of the school, and rediscovered on Mount Gampodar by the 15-year-old son of Master Nyida Sangye, Karma Lingpa (~1350). The work, composed by Padmasambhava, was written by his wife Yeshe Tsogyal in the 8th century. Originally conceived as meditation instructions for the use of adepts for whom the moment of death offered the best opportunity to perfect the Sadhana already practised during their lifetime, these teachings were transformed over the centuries into a mortuary ritual, consisting of ceremonies and readings in honour of the dead. The fame of the Bardo Thödol in the West goes back to the discovery of its main part, the stages of the bardo, by the American theosophist Walter Evans-Wentz (1878-1965), who had it translated by Lama Kazi Dawa Samdup in 1927. Jung wrote a psychological commentary on it.
