About the relationship between church and state during the medieval period when, despite the maxim "Render to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's," the papacy developed a doctrine that tended to allow it to claim supreme sovereignty for itself.

Marcel Pacaut (1920 - 2002) was a historian specialising in the history of Christianity, institutions and power in the Middle Ages. He was a professor of history and doctor of letters, and held the chair of medieval history at the University of Lyon II (1956-1989). Author of some twenty works on the Middle Ages, he was one of the promoters of the renewal of religious history in connection with the history of society and mentalities.
