While the New Testament only mentions the name of the apostle Bartholomew, an ancient tradition saw him as the repository of certain mysteries, relating to the descent into hell and the resurrection of Jesus. The two apocryphal writings gathered here, the Questions of Bartholomew and the Coptic Book of the Resurrection, are related to this tradition. Published for the first time in French translation, they allow us to discover little-known aspects of Christianity in the early centuries. Jean-Daniel Kaestli is a professor at the Faculty of Theology and director of the Institute of Biblical Sciences at the University of Lausanne. Together with Eric Junod, he published the critical edition and commentary of the Apocryphal Acts of John. Since 1987 he has been president of the Association for the Study of Christian Apocryphal Literature (AELAC). Pierre Cherix, a lecturer at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Lausanne, is a specialist in the Coptic language. He is collaborating on the publication of the concordance of the Nag Hammadi writings and has prepared the edition of Coptic apocryphal texts, notably the Acts of Paul.
