"This remarkably clear study is also an introduction to Indian aesthetics and even to aesthetics tout court" (Jacques Brosse, Les Nouvelles Littéraires).
Alain Daniélou and the Swiss photographer Raymond Burnier spent long periods of time studying at the sanctuaries of Khajuraho, Bhuvaneshvar and Konarak, as well as at many lesser-known sites in central India and Rajputana. They brought back an exceptional iconographic documentation of more than 7000 photographic negatives. It is these photographs that illustrate Divinized Eroticism and The Hindu Temple in which Alain Daniélou opens readers to the metaphysics of eroticism as it is experienced and represented in the sacred art and literature of India, and then takes them on a journey to penetrate the cosmogonic, symbolic and mystical dimension of the architectural and sculptural universe of Hindu temples, and to listen to the gods who populate these temples raised to their glory and their loves.
