Vargas LLosa, La civilizacion del espectaculo.
- Condition: very good, clean, minimal signs of wear.
Contemporary culture has undergone a metamorphosis and nothing, it seems, resists this denaturation, or even erasure of its value, any longer. The trivialization of the arts and letters, the triumph of the celebrity press and the frivolity of politics are, for Mario Vargas Llosa, symptoms of a greater evil: the sacralization of entertainment as the ultimate goal of existence in our societies. Whereas culture used to be a tool for education and a requirement for lucidity, today the primacy of the spectacle has become the rule, leading to the distraction, in the literal sense, of all moral, intellectual and political awareness. We are living in an age of false icons, of perishable goods of the mind, of moral fraud, in a word, of blindness. Mario Vargas Llosa, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for having proposed a "cartography of the structures of power", sounds the alarm and here puts our era on trial - futile, fickle, suicidal. He claims, once again, the right to a different culture which, rather than imposing new servitudes on us, makes us freer.
