R.E.M. is an American rock band from Athens, Georgia. It was formed in 1979 by Michael Stipe (vocals), Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass) and Bill Berry (drums). It was one of the first popular alternative rock bands, gaining early attention for Buck's arpeggiated guitar playing and Stipe's enigmatic lyrics. R.E.M. released their first single, Radio Free Europe, followed by the EP Chronic Town in 1981. The band released a critically acclaimed debut album, Murmur, in 1983, and built their reputation over the next few years through several albums, relentless touring and support from student radio stations. After several years of underground success, R.E.M. hit the mainstream with The One I Love in 1987. The band signed with Warner Bros. Records in 1988, and began to become politically and environmentally active, as well as playing increasingly large venues around the world. In the early 1990s, when alternative rock began to gain wider acceptance, R.E.M. were seen as pioneers of the genre and released their two most commercially successful albums to date: 1991's Out of Time and 1992's Automatic for the People, both of which broke away from the band's original sound. In 1994, the album Monster marked a return to a rock sound. The band embarked on their first tour in six years to promote the album. In 1997, R.E.M. extended their contract with Warner Bros. for eighty million dollars, the biggest deal in the music industry at the time. The following year, Bill Berry parted ways with the band amicably and Buck, Mills, and Stipe continued as a trio. With some musical changes, the band continued their career over the next decade with some commercial success. On September 16, 2007, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and on September 21, 2011, the band broke up, posting a message on their official website thanking their fans. No reason is given for the decision to split. In total, the band's sales are estimated at eighty-five million albums.
