Thin layer chromatography (TLC) is an elegant method of separating mixtures of substances that can be achieved with relatively simple means. It is mainly used for analytical purposes, but sometimes also for the preparatory isolation of substances. As its Greek name suggests (χρωμα - "chroma" = colour / γραφειν - "graphein" = to write), chromatography was first discovered on the separation of coloured substances, by the Russian botanist Tswett (1909), who separated dyes from leaves in a column filled with calcium carbonate. The first DCs in the present sense were performed around 1950 on sorbent-coated slides.
