    George Rippey Stewart (1895 - 1980) was a toponymist and writer. He received a BA from Princeton University (1917), an MA from the University of California at Berkeley, and a PhD in English literature from Columbia University (1922). He was Professor of English at the University of California at Berkeley from 1923 to 1962. "Maria the Storm/On the Passage of the Cyclone" (Storm, 1941), which tells the story of a cyclone, gave rise to the idea of naming tropical storms. His post-apocalyptic story, "Earth Abides" (1949), won the first International Fantasy Award in 1951.
