Raphaël Freida (1877-1942) was born in Digne and was a student of Jean-Paul Laurens. The influence of the symbolist painters of this period can be seen in his work. Bibliophiles will tell you that his style is very similar to that of Félicien Rops, his elder brother... Many of his compositions are reminiscent of contemporary comics: Jim Burns and Melvyn Grant did not invent anything! A complete artist - A cursed artist, Raphaël Freida wanted to be uncompromising, which resulted, among other things, in sometimes tense relations with the publishers and craftsmen who printed his books. Some of his letters are proof of this: "I see that the engravers don't pay attention to the nets! "I notice that the engraver doesn't want to do the layout I ask for! "Be careful! Put the engraving straight...". This may explain the limited number of illustrated works from 1914 to 1927. Five are mentioned in all the articles about him. One could have added The Extraordinary Stories of Edgar Poe, the studies of which were made but the work never published.
