Prosper Mérimée was born on 27 September 1803 in Paris to a cultured family and studied law. A fan of literary salons and social events, he rubbed shoulders with the great writers of the time, such as Victor Hugo, Alfred de Musset and Stendhal, from whom he often drew inspiration. As a literary mystifier, he wrote plays (Clara Gazul's Theatre in 1825) and then set about writing a work of a historical nature that was closer to an adventure novel (Chronique du règne de Charles IX in 1829). His inspiration with a romantic tendency seems to meet no limits.
