For nearly a century, from 418 to 507 CE, the Visigoths occupied the southwest of what is now France, with the explicit agreement of the Roman emperors, unable to defend this vast territory, which stretched from Poitiers to Narbonne and from Bordeaux to Clermont-Ferrand, and then reached Provence and Spain. Coming from the East, the Visigoths, guided by remarkable kings (Theodoric I, Theodoric II, Euric), while imitating Roman institutions or preserving them, were to introduce into this southern France a civilisation whose religious, political and social singularities, such as the influence of Toulouse, contributed to the first "golden age" of Occitania.
