The History of Medieval Political Thought, first published in 1988 by Cambridge University Press, paints a picture of the laborious construction of an original political thought, that of the Christian West. The structure and characteristics of their society could not fail to raise the difficult questions of political theory that medieval thinkers had to face. From a wide range of materials (philosophical, theological, juridical and canonical), medieval political thought confronts the great questions of the origin, justification and legitimacy of power and authority; the problems of their extent, their concentration or diffusion in the body politic, as well as of the participation of the latter in their exercise; the complex questions related to the search for an ideal form of government, to the limits and control of it, and to the resistance that can be put up against it; the difficulties related to the place and role of law and right in politics, to the de facto and de jure relationship between the Church and the State, to the status of individuals and individual property with regard to political power. .. The book focuses mainly on the evolution of political thought in the Christian West during the Middle Ages; it does not neglect the contribution of Byzantine, Islamic and Jewish thought. Thanks to the collaboration of a team of researchers renowned for the quality of their work on the various subjects covered, this book provides an authoritative assessment of the research that has been carried out in this field over the last few decades. Published under the direction of J.H. Burns, a renowned historian of late medieval political thought and Professor Emeritus of the History of Political Thought at the University of London, the History of Medieval Political Thought unquestionably reflects the coherence of a millennium of reflection on the components of Western society and its government. A second volume, published in 1991 by Cambridge University Press, continues the examination of the history of Western political thought up to 1700. The French translation will be published by Presses Universitaires de France in the same collection.
