In this masterly work published in 1947, Henri Dontenville sets out a vast body of material which he groups under the name of "French mythology". In 1937, at the International Folklore Congress, foreign specialists had drawn the attention of their French colleagues to the lack of story collection in France. The author has therefore taken up a real challenge by developing his method in the aftermath of the Second World War, as he goes back in time much further than the Gallo-Roman period: Gargantua, Mélusine and the Aymon brothers are not saints likely to extend the gods.
