Even more than the first air crossing of the North Atlantic from Paris to New York, the success of Costes and Bellonte is a revenge for French aeronautics in the eyes of pilots, manufacturers and politicians. Given the superiority of French aviation over the rest of the world at the end of the war, Lindbergh's first crossing of the Atlantic had not been well received in Europe, even though the young American had been triumphantly welcomed at Le Bourget. Following this "affront", the feat of Costes and Bellonte was felt as a rehabilitation of French aviation. The press triumphantly reports on the success of this crossing and glorifies in a patriotic mode the exploit of the two pilots and the power of the French aeronautical industry. The photograph also restores the image of an authentic physical and technological exploit of the two pilots and their plane, the Breguet Point d'interrogation.
