    First edition.

Antoine-Louis Martin, known as "Louis Aimé-Martin", was born in Lyon [Rhône], on 21 April 1782, the only son of a father who had fought against the Convention, at the siege of the city of Lyon, he died in Paris, on Monday, 21 June 1847.
The taste for letters had pushed Aimé-Martin to settle in Paris at the beginning of the century, where he often occupied various not very stable positions. He published and edited a fairly large number of works, which were reprinted several times. He made a name for himself by writing the Étrennes à la jeunesse, a collection of moral historiettes in verse and prose (Paris, Demonville, 1809-1812, 4 vols. in-18, fig.) and above all the publication of Lettres à Sophie sur la physique, la chimie et l'histoire naturelle (Paris, H. Nicolle, 1810, 2 vols. in-8), which were well received by the public and brought him to the attention of the writer Jacques-Henri-Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (1737-1814). The latter soon took him on as a secretary and received him familiarly. Aimé-Martin edited a new edition of the Traité de l'existence de Dieu (Paris, Demonville, 1811), by Fénelon, and published a short novel, Raymond (Paris, Panckoucke et H. Nicolle, 1812, in-8). In 1813, he was given a history course at the Athénée. The following year, he was attached to the editorial staff of the Journal des débats, to which he gave numerous articles on the physical sciences, natural history and agriculture, and edited the Portrait d'Attila (Paris, Librairie Stéréotype, 1814, in-8), by Mme de Staël. In 1815, he was given the job of secretary-editor at the Chamber of Deputies, thanks to the protection of its president, Joseph-Henri-Joachim Lainé (1768-1835), and edited Saint-Pierre's Harmonies de la nature (Paris, Méquignon-Marvis, 1815, 3 vols. in-8). In 1816, when the École Polytechnique was reorganised, he was given the chair of professor of belles-lettres to replace François Andrieux (1759-1833). He edited the Œuvres complètes de Jacques-Henri-Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (Paris, Méquignon-Marvis, 1818-1820, 12 vol. in-8, 20 figs.), preceded by an "Essai sur la vie et les ouvrages de Bernardin de Saint-Pierre". Some passages of this "Essay" gave rise, in 1821, to a lawsuit brought by one of the brothers of Félicité Didot (1773-1799), Saint-Pierre's first wife, Léger Didot (1767-1829), who complained of having been slandered by Aimé-Martin: the court condemned Aimé-Martin to a fine of 300 fr. and to 1,000 fr. of damages to Léger Didot, ordered that pages 230 and 231, as well as the note at the bottom of the latter page, be deleted from all copies still on sale; Aimé-Martin having appealed, the Royal Court reformed the judgment of the court of first instance by reducing the fine to the minimum of 16 fr. and awarding Léger Didot only 25 fr. in damages; the Supreme Court rejected Léger Didot's appeal in cassation.
