A few days before his death, Jules Verne gave his publisher Jules Hetzel the manuscript of this novel. The publisher found that the work did not correspond to the "education and recreation" image to which he had confined Jules Verne. He forced Michel Verne to modify his father's work.
The result was a distorted work, stripped of Jules Verne's fantastic inspiration.
