Jacques-Antoine Dulaure, born on 3 December 1755 in Clermont-Ferrand and died on 18 August 1835 in Paris, was a French archaeologist and historian. Before beginning his literary career, Dulaure was successively involved in architecture and topography. His first writings were reviews of some of the monuments of Paris, mainly the Odeon. Soon afterwards he published various works in which his detestation of the abuses, injustices and false doctrines of the Ancien Régime shone through. Such were his and a Nouvelle Description des curiosités de Paris, guide pour les étrangers mêlés d'attaques contre la monarchie. (1785), his Description de Paris et de ses environs, ses Singularités historiques, etc. (1st ed., 1786). His numerous works are almost all related to Paris, France and the Revolution. The most important is his Histoire civile, physique et morale de Paris, Paris, 1821, 10 vols. in-8°; 3rd edition, Paris, 1825, 10 vols. in-12, with fig. and atlas. This work, full of curious researches and little known facts, which accumulates the accusations incurred by the kings and the clergy[1], raised against the author the most violent attacks of the partisans of the old regime.
