From the beginning of the 18th century, there was a flowering of dictionaries or glossaries of varying importance in Provence and Languedoc which had a very clear pedagogical objective, that of facilitating the learning of the French language. Sauveur-André PELLAS, a religious of the Minimes Order in Aix en Provence, is the author of the oldest known Provençal and French dictionary, published in Avignon in 1723; he was born in Aix and baptised on 1 August 1667 in the church of the Madeleine (godfather Jean Pellas, godmother Lucrèce de Bot), he died in 1727.
