The map illustrates the African continent around 1756, reflecting the knowledge available at the time; the lakes and rivers appear to be entirely accurate.Born into a family of cartographers, a descendant of the famous Nicolas Sanson and ordinary geographer to the King, Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688 - 1766) made a name for himself with his maps of the French provinces. After a Petit Atlas (1748), he produced a Atlas universel (1758), considered an authoritative source of information for many years, and a Atlas portatif (1762). His warnings, prefaces and book reviews reveal a Cartesian mind and solid knowledge. Very early on, he associated his son Didier (1723 - 1786) with his work, and in 1742 he published Nicolas Sanson's methodical tables and two Globes, one terrestrial, the other celestial (1752).
