First edition. First-rate testimony to life at court at the end of the Ancien Régime and up to the death of the queen (1787 - 1793).
Adélaïde Henriette Damoville, known as Madame Eloffe (1759-1805), born into a somewhat impoverished background, entered the service of Madame Pompey and trained as a fashion dealer. She married M. Eloffe and they ended up taking over Madame Pompey's clientele. They supplied the court of Versailles at the end of the 18th century, the royal family of the time and even Marie Antoinette. Her two account books give information on what was sold in the shop.
The appendix contains a state of the court in 1787, a summary of the livre-journal, a dictionary of fashion terms and the score of a harpsichord piece by Dussek on the death of Marie Antoinette.
