His real name was William Erwin Eisner, and he was born in New York on March 6, 1917. His vocation as a professional cartoonist was born when he discovered the plates of Milton Caniff, Alex Raymond, George Herriman in the newspapers he distributed to earn pocket money... After several years spent illustrating and publishing series in various magazines on the British, American and Australian markets, he joined Quality Comics in 1939, where he worked as a scriptwriter, cartoonist, humorist and editor. In 1940 he created The Spirit, a series in which he introduced his new graphic and narrative techniques (cinematic framing, suggestion of time passing, sound, etc.) which influenced a whole generation of cartoonists. In 1942, he was mobilised but nevertheless managed to continue his art, as he drew plates for the magazine Army Motors intended to train and educate the troops in equipment maintenance. After the war, he resumed his old work, including The Spirit, and was awarded the prize for best comic book artist by the NCS (National Cartoonists Society). He was awarded the Yellow Kid at the Luca Festival in 1974, and finally the Grand Prix at the Angoulême International Comic Book Fair the following year. With A Contract with God in 1978 published by Baronet Books (Un bail avec Dieu by Humanoïdes associés in 1982, reprinted in 1993 by Glénat under the title Le Contrat), Life on another Planet (L'appel de l'espace, published by Albin Michel), and Big City (Albin Michel, Comics USA, Peplum, USA and Vertige Graphic), Will Eisner can be said to be one of the greatest authors of the 9th art. At the age of 84, he looks back on his military experiences that continued after the Second World War through Army Motors and then PS Magazine.
