Theo van den Boogaard (born in Castricum on 25 March 1948) is a Dutch comic book writer. A contemporary of Joost Swarte and Willem, he is one of the biggest names in underground comics in his country. Today he is mainly known in France and the Netherlands for Sjef van Oekel (translated as Léon van Oekel and Léon-la-Terreur), a series he animated from 1976 to 1999 with director Wim T. Schippers. In Germany, he is best known for his 1969 pornographic comic strip Ans en Hans krijgen de Kans (Ans and Hans take the opportunity), which was blacklisted in 1973. He is very famous in the Netherlands, but his style is characteristic of the underground. For Sjef van Oekel, he is linked to the ligne claire, which allows him to combine "graphic legibility with a disrespectful discourse", to accentuate the humorous effect of his plates. Theo van den Boogaard published his first album, Mark, in 1964. From that time on, he was part of the underground movement. In 1967, he created Striptease in the underground weekly Hitweek, and later Witje en Gert, in collaboration with the scriptwriter Jan Donkers. In 1968 he also adapted Pinocchio for Studio. In 1969 Hitweek became Aloha, where Van den Boogaard published the erotic comic strip Ans en Hans. In 1970-1971 he produced Jan Alleman for the alternative magazine Gandalf and in 1972 Abe, together with sports journalist Nico Scheepmaker, in the football weekly Voetbal International. As a member of the Provo movement, he was 'one of those who pushed iconoclastic delirium the furthest'. In 1976 Van den Boogaard, together with Wim T. Schippers, created Sjef van Oekel in the weekly magazine Nieuwe Revue. Adapted from a programme produced by Schippers in which Sjef was played by Dolf Brouwers, this comic strip with a very Dutch sense of humour was a very quick success.
