The original edition was published in Frankfurt in 1591.

The beautiful mark of Philippe Albert shows a model representing fame, a winged woman playing a trumpet with her right hand, an open book on her left, flanked by two snakes. Her left foot rests on a globe which in turn is present in a rectangular block. Motto: "Perpetuaque gloria comparatur, ac studio per orben virtute".

Gregory (born around 1540 and died around 1614) was a professor in Cahors, Toulouse and Pont-a-Mousson where he had violent quarrels with the Jesuits. His 'great syntagma juris universi' is based on the order of institutions. But he deviates from it insofar as he places res before personae, because that was the order at the time of creation. By actiones he means all acts, which is why he also includes modes of acquiring property, contracts, crimes, etc. His systematics has hardly been recognised in Germany, but his work has been widely used" (see Stintzing-Landsberg).
