Canon law (Codex Iuris Canonici = CIC) has developed over a long period of time from papal and conciliar decisions. In 1234, Pope Gregory IX published it in five books. Such a genesis has its drawbacks: no clear order, many repetitions and even contradictory decisions. Boniface VIII wanted to remedy this. In all modesty, he called his collection, following Gregory's five books, Liber sextus. In reality, however, this sixth book completely superseded the previous five and, together with the additions of the two successor popes Clement V (1305-14) and John XXII (1316-34), made up the entire CIC. These additions are also called Clementines and Extravagantes.
