An indispensable reference work, La Flore d'Europe occidentale is an exceptional inventory of the richness of our plant environment. The numerous illustrations, of extreme delicacy and precision, constitute a perfect synthesis of the science and talent of two British botanists, endorsed by the best international scientists. The result of a lifetime - that of Marjorie Blamey - entirely devoted to the illustration of wild plants, this flora constitutes an irreplaceable working tool for plant identification. Indeed, what characterises the drawings, apart from their undeniable artistic qualities and the finesse of the rendering, is their scientific precision. All the important species from Western Europe north of the Alps and from the Mediterranean region - native and introduced, widespread or not - are listed, except for grasses, sedges and rushes. On the left-hand pages are the significant details of the plants that allow their identification: flowers, leaves, stems, fruits or seeds. These elements are referenced by numbers in the texts and sometimes accompanied by asterisks referring to the overall portraits on the right-hand page. Most of the illustrations, with the exception of those expressly indicated, are life-size. The descriptive texts were written by Christopher Grey-Wilson of Kew Gardens, UK. The texts are deliberately concise and give the essential information on height and habit, as well as the main characteristics for identifying the species. Habitat, altitude and geographical ranges are also given. Identification keys and two indexes of common and scientific names close the book.
