Malformations of the bronchial tree, hereditary conditions, microbial infections, difficulties in adapting to life in the air, respiratory pathology is frequent in small children or newborns. It must be treated, often urgently, but always perfectly. Alongside medical techniques, respiratory physiotherapy has a special place since its aim is to restore and maintain the freedom of the airways. The first part of this book presents general data on respiratory physiology and semiology, on techniques of exploration of the respiratory function, on the concerned therapies, controlled ventilation and oxygen therapy. The second part is devoted to the study of physiotherapeutic techniques of decongestion: ventilation posture, acceleration of the expiratory flow, nasopharyngeal deobstruction, tracheal suctioning, etc., and to their practice in particular situations (children under oxygen therapy, intubated, curarized, etc.) The last part reviews the main respiratory diseases and the physiotherapeutic treatments adapted to them, both in hospital and in the community. This book summarizes the current techniques of bronchopulmonary clearance for premature babies, infants and small children. Presented in a didactic way, remarkably illustrated by clear diagrams of materials and techniques, it constitutes an essential working tool for the physiotherapist. It will also be of interest to pediatricians, pulmonologists, resuscitation anaesthetists, and nursing staff concerned with understanding the effectiveness of respiratory physiotherapy in pediatrics.
