Reflexology has its roots in the tradition of foot and hand massage. It has been practiced for thousands of years in Egypt, Greece and Asia. Modern or Western Reflexology was developed in the early 20th century by American and European physicians who analysed the role of reflexes in the nervous system.
The major laws of Reflexology were identified following work in neurophysiology, particularly that of Jean Bossy (1929-2009). His book Bases neurobiologiques des réflexothérapies, published in 1975 and republished in 1983 remains a reference.
