Born in Padua, Giovanni Antonio Rizzi-Zannoni (1736 - 1814) began his career in the service of Homann's heirs in Germany in the 1750s, then moved to Paris from 1761 to 1776, before beginning a new phase in his life as a geographer in Italy, in Padua (1778) and Naples (1781). His international career illustrates the transnational dimension of science in the Age of Enlightenment and, through his methodological inflections, the transition from a cabinet geography to a field geography.
