Thérèse de Dillmont was an Austrian-born embroiderer born on 28 October 1846. This young aristocrat graduated from the Vienna Embroidery Academy, where she was admitted in 1864, and showed an undeniable gift for fine embroidery. She opened an embroidery shop with her sister and gave lessons. It was during a trip to Paris for the 1880 Universal Exhibition that she met Jean Dollfus-Mieg, and a friendly and professional relationship was born. Jean Dollfus-Mieg saw the added value that she could bring to his company with her embroidery ideas, so he persuaded her to move to Dornach, a small town near Mulhouse, in order to set up a workshop, where she also founded an embroidery school. A contract binding her to DMC has been found. In this contract, dated 26 October 1884, a clause stipulates that she is forbidden to marry as long as she works for the brand. It is very likely that this clause was stipulated so that the Dillmont name would not be lost. Indeed, from now on, Dillmont's name is inseparably linked to the DMC brand. She published various books, including the Encyclopaedia of Ladies' Works in 1886. In addition to her studies and research, Thérèse de Dillmont collected thousands of examples of local embroidery, folk fabrics and ethnic motifs from all over the world, which served as inspiration for her and her students. In 1889, Therese de Dillmont married the businessman Joseph Friedrich Scheuermann and gave up her professional partnership with DMC. Victim of the influenza epidemic that raged at the time, she died, 4 months after her marriage, on 22 May 1890, in Baden-Baden.
