Italian text by Giovanni Bertati, based on The Clandestine Marriage of George Colman and David Garrick.

Domenico Cimarosa is an important figure at the crossroads of two eras. Symbolically, his opera The Secret Wedding is placed exactly between Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and Rossini's The Barber of Seville - between the two, but not below. His talent enabled him to escape his social status and his phenomenal capacity for work made him one of the most respected musicians in Europe. At the age of twenty-three, in 1772, Domenico Cimarosa's first opera buffa brought him fame in Naples; then it was Florence, the whole of Italy, the German states thanks to Goethe's enthusiasm, then four years in St Petersburg with Catherine II, then a stay with Leopold II in Vienna.
