Grandmaison's work, one of the founding texts of the theory of small-scale warfare, is the second publication to deal with the subject, following on from the treatise by the Chevalier de Lacroix (son of the famous partisan of the end of Louis XIV's reign) published in 1752.
Thomas-Auguste Grandmaison (1715-1801) had a fine career, given his extraction from the lower nobility: an officer in the militia, he moved on to the free companies of dragoons and then arquebusiers, and then served in the regiment of Flanders volunteers and then No. 30 in that of Hainaut. He reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel and then lieutenant-general, after having been governor of Cambrai. He proved to be an excellent leader of men and showed great courage during the Wars of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War, then in Corsica. He thus revealed his worth mainly in small war operations, under the orders of men who were masters in the field such as Colonel de Grassin or Marshal de Saxe, and was therefore one of the officers best suited to write the present treatise.
