The life story of Jovian is followed by the annotated translation of the satire "The Caesars" by Julian, called the Apostate. Volume 2 contains the letters, an allegorical fable and Julian's Misopogon (Enemy of the Beard). This speech, magnificently authentic because it is so unconventional, sheds light on the failed encounter between the values that animated him, innovative as well as reactionary, and the complex reality of a civilization that was marching on in spite of him. It also highlights the tension between his philosophical ideal, tinged with ambitious mysticism, and the mission of the head of state who should have continued to work for imperial unity while respecting differences and accepting human mediocrities.
