Beautiful and rare first edition.
"La Vérité de la religion chrétienne" had many editions, of which the original edition is "very rare" (Tchémerzine) and "more beautiful than the last" (Brunet), the 1688 edition contains considerable additions. The work has been translated into several languages: into English by H. Lussan (London 1694), and several times since.
"It has been a long time since a book has been written with more strength and breadth of mind, more great reasoning and more eloquence" (Pierre Bayle, Nouvelles de la République des Lettres, October 1684). The Acta Eruditorum (March 1685), the Journal des Savans (April 1722), give Abbadie the same testimony. Even fanatical Catholics, including the famous Marquise de Sévigné, pushed their admiration to the point of enthusiasm. "It is the most divine of all books; this esteem is general. I do not believe that a man has ever spoken of religion as this man has" (she wrote to Bussy-Rabutin).
Jean-Jacques Abbadie, more commonly known as Jacques Abbadie, born on 27 April 1654, baptised on the same day at the Protestant temple, in Nay and died at the age of 73 on 25 September 1727, was buried in the old Marylebone cemetery.
