Born into a family of cartographers, a descendant of the famous Nicolas Sanson and ordinary geographer to the king, Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688 - 1766) made a name for himself with his maps of the French provinces. After a Petit Atlas (1748), he produced an Atlas universel (1758) and a Atlas portatif (1762). His engraving was beautiful, but he neglected to draw the degrees of longitude and latitude. His warnings, prefaces and book reviews reveal a Cartesian mind and solid knowledge. Very early on, he associated his son Didier (1723 - 1786) with his work, and in 1742 he published Nicolas Sanson's methodical tables and two Globes, one terrestrial, the other celestial (1752).
